Hotel Corridor Lighting with a beach theme
The Sands Resort Torquay in Victoria has been servicing visitors for near on 20 years to the sea side golf resort. Destination Leisure Group purchased The Sands Torquay in dire need of refurbishment. Bluelab Design were appointed Lighting Designers and suppliers to work with Select Architects. The original corridors were corporate in their heyday, but years of traffic had left the passages dark, drab and outdated. Select Interiors team wanted to lift the passages with a beach feel conducive to the location. With very little day light available, lighting was a key element to the success of the corridors light, bright, beach feel. The original corridors had a series of large rebates 500mm Wide by 1800mm tall with a dark timber panel set in with a wall bracket mounted to the timber. The wall brackets were not matching throughout the building, with many wall lighters failing or breaking over time, the wall lights were replaced which added to the dated feel to the accommodation thoroughfare. Bluelab Design knew that the inserts were the key to create an elegant yet bold installation with a Custom wall panel.

The dated colours and finishes coupled with an unfortunate selection of wall lights. The multitude of down lights had been originally halogen, more recently had capitalized on the Government LED upgrade with a cheap and nasty outcome.
Bluelab design proposed a recessed luminaire set into the wall cavity. Select Architects – interior team chose an under water theme to be laser cut onto the fascia. The panel being 500mm wide by 1800mm high folder edges to mount the LED either edge of the screen, 3mm thick opal acrylic fastened to the screen to prevent dust impeding the lighting effect. Powder coat finish to match the corridor walls. The proto-type was installed – Bluelab Design team found light leakage from the top edge, another 2 folds were added to the luminaire design to seal the lighting edges and house the drivers.
Geelong Design and Manufactured.
The Sands Custom corridor Lighting screens were entirely manufactured in Geelong. Local aluminium laser cutting and folding, powder coating and plastic and acrylic suppliers fabricating the components. The custom screens were assembled and wired up in Bluelab Designs factory in Geelong. The electricians on site had a simple job of installation, with a flex and plug base added and 6 screws to fasten – like child’s play!
A sleek elegant outcome.
Along with the flush custom screen being the hero of the corridors, subtle low wattage down lights to replace the old glare bombs and ETAP K1 Exits and Emergencies with EST+ Self-testing create light work for the maintenance team.
The screens throw light over the corridors as well as creating ceiling light. 5W LED down lights with black baffles highlight the individual door frames. ETAP K1 with elongated distribution (escape route lens) reduced the Emergency lighting quantities throughout the 3 levels, providing greater efficiency and less maintenance.
